Literacy in Focus
In the scorching heat of May 2023, MindshiftED parents congregated outside JT Brackenridge Elementary School, situated in the core of San Antonio's most literacy-challenged city council district. Hailing from one of America's oldest public housing communities, these parents initiated "Level Up San Antonio," a campaign shedding light on the literacy crisis within their community and throughout San Antonio. The emotional candlelight vigil witnessed nearly a hundred parents sharing personal stories, such as Jimmy and April Morales expressing to Fox 29, "Even if they're not reading at the level they are supposed to be at, the school just slides them on through. The proof is in the statistics. It doesn't matter what we say or what we believe, if they're not on the right level, how can they push them forward?"

Education is Key.
Reading on grade level by third grade is the most important factor in high school graduation and career success. Did you know that in the City of San Antonio, only half of the students are reading on grade level? And specifically at JT Brackenridge Elementary, only 18% of third grade students are reading on grade level. How can we expect our kids to have a bright future if they are not on track?
We the parents living in the JT Brackenridge Elementary community demand that the school implement the right curriculum, support services and programs to drastically improve the literacy levels of our students. And if SAISD and School Leadership do not initiate these changes, we the parents will explore other higher quality school options and demand that the district or state shut the school down. We can no longer accept failure in our community. .
