Empowering Minds, Transforming Futures
MindShiftED is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families of the most vulnerable and underserved children residing in San Antonio neighborhoods.
We believe that every child in San Antonio will have a high quality education that is inclusive, equitable and meets their unique needs and helps them achieve their highest potential.
Our mission is to elevate educational outcomes by empowering and organizing families of students with learning disabilities, regardless of diagnosis, educational labels, or language barriers. We equip guardians with the tools, knowledge, and skills to become active advocates for their children's education.
Our History
In 2019 a group on San Antonio parents set out to participate in a 6 month fellowship to learn the needs in education through a parent lens. Though block walking self guided community meetings and a profound vision food better school opportunities for families across the city of San Antonio, Texas leaders were chosen to start an organization that would represent the true need of San Antonio Parents. After several focus groups and community meetings a core essential guide was created to teach all families how to be savvy consumers of education.
Although MindshiftED (MSED) became an independent nonprofit organization in 2022, we have been engaging and organizing parents for three years. In that time we have learned about the demographics and greatest needs of our growing base and come to learn that 75% of our active parents and caregivers are Spanish-speaking only and 50% have children with disabilities. The needs, values, and interests of our base of families drives our programming and education priorities and it became clear early on that MSED would have to address barriers to parents fully engaging in their children’s education as well as with education system decision makers. Our families face language barriers as well as barriers to high-quality special education services to which their children are entitled and deserve.
